Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to announce Surprise Moriri as the club’s Technical Director, replacing nobody.
The club previously had the controversial Swede, Flemming Berg, as the Sporting Director; his duties included technical director responsibilities, but not exclusively.
WHY MAMELODI SUNDOWNS ARE APPOINTING A TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
The reports suggest an official announcement from the club is imminent. “We can confirm that Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed Surprise Moriri as the club’s Technical Director,” Soccer Beat reported.
According to Sentinet Sportsgroup’s modern definition of a Technical Director, it is being the guardian of identity and pathway. They ensure alignment from academy to first team through philosophy and methodology.

The primary focus remains on the “technical” side of the game: football philosophy, player development, and coaching standards.
Under coach Miguel Cardoso and Berg, Sundowns have faced heavy criticism for playing football that is empty of the club’s ‘piano shoeshine’ style, which Moriri was viewed as the finest embodiment.
The style is characterised by a possession-based, rhythmic philosophy of quick, short passes and technical flair.
SURPRISE MORIRI AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Born in Matibidi, Mpumalanga, Moriri wore the Kabo Yellow jersey for 12 seasons before retiring in 2016 as one of the club’s greatest ever players.
Known for that rare footballing IQ, the kind you can’t teach, Moriri moved like he already saw the next three passes before the ball even touched his boots.
His influence on the team was consistent, and he played an important role in shaping the club’s identity during that era.
His time at the club was marked by both team success and personal recognition. He contributed to multiple league titles and was part of the squad that won the CAF Champions League. One of his standout individual seasons came in 2005/06, when he was awarded the PSL Player of the Season. A memorable highlight of his career remains his early goal against FC Barcelona in a 2007 friendly.

After retiring from professional football, Moriri moved into coaching and development within the Sundowns setup.
He worked with youth teams, including the Under-19s and the DStv Diski Challenge side, helping to develop young players. He currently serves as a Technical Advisor, focusing on performance analysis and maintaining the club’s playing philosophy across all levels.
