Sundowns striker is safe after dangerous heart problem

Posted on October 24, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has made a return after doctors discovered a potentially dangerous heart problem during routine medical checks.

According to head coach Miguel Cardoso, the issue was detected early and treated in time, allowing the Mitchells Plain-born star to complete a safe comeback to training this week.

The 29-year-old, who joined Kabo Yellow from Stellenbosch FC in August 2024, has scored six goals in eight Betway Premiership matches, placing him level at the top of the scorers’ chart alongside Bradley Grobler of Sekhukhune United and Junior Dion of Golden Arrows.

His ability to turn half-chances into goals has made him one of the most reliable finishers in the country.

To the relief of Rayners’ family, teammates and fans, coach Cardoso has confirmed the cardiac scare has passed, thanks to early detection and treatment by the Sundowns medical team.

“There is no issue in terms of cardiac questions that will take him out of his career,” Cardoso told reporters. “Thank God for his biology and physiology, with the effort of the doctors and the exams he did, everything is fine now.”

“He started training again yesterday and today he completed all the sessions,” Cardoso added. “We just need to give him some time to get back to full condition,” Cardoso concluded.

Masandawana go into the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary qualifier on Sunday with a 5-1 lead over Nigerian Professional Football League champions Remo Stars.
