Mamelodi Sundowns supporters have described Brayan Leon as the new Lucas Ribeiro Costa following his impressive performance in a recent match.
The 25-year-old Colombian forward scored two goals, leading the Brazilians to a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers on Wednesday evening.
At the beginning of the season, Sundowns felt the impact of losing Ribeiro, which affected their fluidity and overall play for much of the first half of the season. However, Leon’s signing has rejuvenated the team, allowing them to score goals with ease.
At FNB Stadium, Leon netted his first goal in the 36th minute with a defence-splitting pass, which stunned the Pirates crowd.
Just minutes later, Modiba set Leon up again, and he tapped in his second goal, bringing the score to 2-0. Although the Buccaneers managed to pull a goal back early in the second half, they were unable to create any meaningful chances to trouble the Sundowns’ defence.
New Ribeiro destroys Pirates
Following the match, Sundowns fans praised Leon, with many comparing him to the former star Lucas Ribeiro Costa. In the two seasons the Brazilian played for Downs, he tormented the Buccaneers, scoring three times.
Social media was buzzing on Wednesday night with Sundowns fans mocking their rivals about the ‘new Ribeiro’.
“Sundowns supporters, I can tell you for free that, since the arrival of Leon I no longer miss Ribeiro at all,” tweeted @Mnca_mnce.
“They said they were scared of Ribeiro fine, we went and got a monster!” @rhirhandzuu tweeted.
“Pains were delivered. The new Ribeiro,” @Maleooooooooooo tweeted.
The Buccaneers still sit on the table but Sundowns have cut their lead to just three points and have a game in hand.
