Sundowns And Hilal Share Spoils In Thriller At Loftus

Posted on January 24, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns and Sudanese giants Al Hilal SC played out to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their round three CAF Champions League fixture at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening.

Having come into the clash leading the group with Hilal in second, both unbeaten after two games, it was a clash that could have potentially defined the group in Tshwane with only one goal separating the standings.

Abdelrazig Omer opened the scoring with a snapshot at the nearpost that left Ronwen Williams with no chance to react, which stunned the hosts and the home supporters.

But just seven minutes later, they responded the Brazilian forward Arthur Sales, who beat the off-side trap from Nuno Santos’ delivery to level matters, which they took into the break in Tshwane on the night.

But the action didn’t end there, as four minutes after the hour mark, after some tentative passasges of play between the two sides, Teboho Mokoena netted a stunning long-range effort to put Sundowns in the lead for the first time in the game.

But again, just seven minutes later – Hilal drew level with Omer bagging his brace, after some slack defending inside the area, saw the ball fall to his feet to slot home his second of the night.

There was also late drama when substitute Emmanuel Flomo received a straight card after a push on Khuliso Mudau.

The draw moves leaders Sundowns to five points, equal with Hilal, who have one goal fewer, while MC Alger and St Eloi Lupopo, who face off on Saturday have one point each after two games.
