Sports Ministry allocates R82 million for VAR in the PSL!

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has announced it has allocated a whopping R82 million for Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The Department, led by Minister Gayton McKenzie, had vowed to make VAR dream a realty in South African football.

And this advancement is a result of SAFA‘s commitment to make this possible, according to a statement released on Thursday.

Initially, expectations were that VAR would be implemented in PSL matches this season, but in July, McKenzie pleaded with parliament to give SAFA more time.

At this stage, however, this R82 million funding will be channeled towards the development of a comprehensive project plan, training programmes for referees and officials.

This means South African football fans will still have to wait for some time for the implementation of VAR in the PSL.
