‘Sorry, Chiefs didn’t impress me’ – Broos on why he snubbed Amakhosi players

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has once again explained why he opted not to select any Kaizer Chiefs players in his 23-man squad.

This is not the first time that the coach’s squad has lacked any Amakhosi players. When he was questioned in the past about why he overlooked Chiefs players, the Belgian coach stood firm, explaining how the Soweto giants have been below par for the past few seasons.

Speaking on SABC Sports, Broos said he was not impressed with how Kaizer Chiefs played in their last matches.

“Okay, maybe the people will be angry at me again but I was at the Chiefs game yesterday and Chiefs didn’t play a good game, I’m sorry,” said the Bafana coach.

“What is a chance? Is a shot on goal is a chance? Broos asked when he was told Amakhosi created many chances against Amakazulu.

“Maybe I’m different in evaluating games than you are, but I can’t say I saw a good game yesterday. I want to see more games where they show fight and play against quality teams,” he added.

Broos not impressed with Chiefs but praises Pirates

The Bafana coach said he was pleased with how the season was turning out. He highlighted the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns were not as dominant compared to the previous seasons but also praised Orlando Pirates.

“Pirates play very good now, they have a pool of players where they can make changes everytime. That is good [for South African football],” Broos added.

Bafana Bafana are in action later this month against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Two big wins from both matches will see South Africa qualify for the 2026 showpiece.
