Six senior Sundowns stars tipped to leave as new era looms

Posted on January 19, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns FC are set to undergo a massive transition phase.

Some of the clubs senior players appear to no longer be part of the plans at Chloorkop.

Masandawana have already brought in some fresh faces in the form of Brayan Leon, Monnapule Saleng and Khulumane Ndamane with more changes are also expected at the club as the January transfer window unfolds.

Sundowns also said goodbye to senior defender Mosa Lebusa, who joined Stellenbosch over the weekend. And now, fresh reports suggest more of their senior players are at risk of being offloaded.

Six Sundowns players linked with an exit

A number of senior Mamelodi Sundowns players face a nervy upcoming six months. According to Soccer Laduma, the club are entering a rebuilding phase and will likely part ways with some of their ageing stars.

According to the publication, Denis Onyango, Mothobi Mvala, Themba Zwane, Thapelo Morena and Sphelele Mkhulise’s futures at the club are all far from guaranteed. The same goes for Khuliso Mudua, who’s reportedly also keen on leaving the club.

Masandawana will finalise their exit lists in the coming months. “Sundowns had a similar situation of a mass exodus at the end of last season, and Soccer Laduma understands that there is a good chance of some of the experienced campaigners leaving when the curtains close on the current campaign,” the publication reported.

More to follow after Lebusa’s exit

After a seven year stay at Mamelodi Sundowns, Mosa Lebusa became the latest player to leave the club.

The utility defender made over 207 appearances for the club. He original made a name for himself at Cape Town Spurs (formerly Ajax Cape Town).

Now, he’ll return to the Cape where saving Stellenbosch from relegation will be his number one priority.
