Shandu set to say his goodbyes, Mabasa jumps ship

Posted on January 19, 2026

Orlando Pirates have been quite active during the January transfer window.

The Buccaneers have already made three signings while also parting ways with three players. Earlier this month, they signed Andre De Jong, Daniel Msendami, and Mpho Chabatsane.

In contrast, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Sinoxolo Kwayiba have been sold, and Tshegofatso Mabasa has been loaned to Stellenbosch FC for the remainder of the season.

With just 12 days left until the January transfer window ends, Orlando Pirates could still make a signing or two. Given that the team is already out of the CAF Confederation, it is less likely that they might want to add players unless a key player gets injured.

One player set to leave the Sea Robbers at the end of the season is Bandile Shandu. The 31-year-old right-back has been at the club for five years, making 110 appearances for the Soweto giants.

His contract expires at the end of this season however, his agent Mike Makaab said talks regarding the player’s future would take place.

“Bandile, his contract is expiring at the end of the season,” Makaab told iDiski Times.

“But I’m engaged in discussions with Orlando Pirates. Next week [this week], we’ll know exactly where we stand.”

Orlando Pirates transfer Mabasa

Stellenbosch FC signed Tshegofatso Mabasa from Orlando Pirates on loan leaving no space for Kaizer Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris.

The Amakhosi star has not featured much and was linked with a permanent move to Stellies, which would see him reunite with former coach Gavin Hunt.

Under the guidance of the Cape Town-born coach, Morris impressed at SuperSport United before Chiefs came calling.

With Mabasa having joined Stellenbosch, it makes sense that the Cape Winelands side will take the Pirates striker over the Chiefs target man.

Currently, Kaizer Chiefs have Morris, Ashley du Preez, Khanyisa Mayo, Naledi Hlungwane, Etiosa Ighodaro and Flavio Silva as strikers. Morris will probably not feature this season unless he can force a loan move elsewhere.

Stellenbosch have just lost top striker Andre de Jong to Orlando Pirates this transfer window but them signing Mabasa could soften the blow.
