Seven trophies in five years

Orlando Pirates have now won seven trophies in the past five years following their 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday evening.

Tshepang Moremi scored a brace and Tshegofatso Mabasa added another to give the Buccaneers their fourth successive MTN8 title.

The Soweto giants required extra time to win the match after neither team scored in the 90 minutes. With both teams evenly matched, Orlando Pirates hit a different gear in extra time and scored three goals,s leaving Stellies with no chance

Under Joseph Zimbauer, Pirates won the MTN8 in 2020, which was their first cup win in six years. Two years later, Jose Riveiro was hired as head coach, and he immediately won the MTN8. The Spaniard ended his three-year tenure with the Buccaneers with five trophies.

With 14 MTN8 titles, Orlando Pirates are just one shy away from matching Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15. Having reached eight domestic finals in the last five years, the Buccaneers have won seven trophies, making them the “cup kings” of South African football.

Orlando Pirates will now turn their attention to CAF Champions League, where they will play Lioli of Lesotho on 20 September in the first leg of the preliminary round. The Buccaneers reached the semi-final of the competition last season.

Will Pirates win more trophies?
