Senegal Lift AFCON After VAR Chaos

Posted on January 19, 2026

Senegal have won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nation after beating hosts Morocco 1-0 in a game that was overshadowed by parts of the Lions of Teranga squad walking off the pitch in injury-time.

The game was overshadowed by a contentious penalty in the 95th minute after VAR review by referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala.

Chaos erupted and parts of the Senegal squad walked off the pitch, until Sadio Mane called his teammates back. Brahim Diaz, the tournament’s leading goalscorer, eventually stepped up in the 113th minute and attempted a panenka penalty but it was saved by Eduoard Mendy.

Earlier in the 92nd minute, Senegal had thought they had gone 1-0 up but their goal was ruled out by the referee.

Before the drama in injury-time, the match was pretty dull was both sides equalling each other out for large parts.

The deciding goal came in the fourth minute of extra-time when Pape Gueye sent a rocket Past Bono in the Morocco goal.

The hosts had two great chances to find an equalizer but a header just missed the target, while they also hit the cross bar.
