Sekhukhune Thump Chiefs At FNB To Go Top

Posted on September 17, 2025

Unbeaten Sekhukhune United inflicted Kaizer Chiefs‘ first defeat of the season with a 3-1 win at FNB Stadium to move back to the top of the table on Tuesday evening.

It was a frenetic fixture from start to finish with end-to-end football, as both sides created plenty of chances in a game very much based on transitions.

The visitors, who made one change to their starting line-up with Toaster Nsabata coming in for Renaldo Leaner, took the lead in the opening five minutes through veteran striker Bradley Grobler.

Chiefs made four changes, with Gaston Sirino, Flavio da Silva, Aden McCarthy and Reeve Frolser returning to the starting line-up for Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, Zitha Kwinika and the injured Thabiso Monyane – who had a blow in training on Monday.

Amakhosi rallied back with Da Silva levelling matters after 12 minutes, as Glody Lilepo set him up after a driving run and cut back from the by line and that’s how the scores remained for the opening half.

Grobler, however, was not done yet, and bagged his brace just five minutes after the break with another typical poacher’s finish, before Thabang Monare added more salt into the wound six minutes later after a swift counterattack.

The veteran midfielder prodded the ball home beyond Brandon Petersen, who before this evening, had five clean sheets in the opening five league games this season.

Victory for Babina Noko move them back on top of the table ahead of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, with 16 points, five wins and one draw in their opening six games – while Chiefs are third, on 13 points, with four wins, one draw and one defeat.
