SABC to televise Chiefs vs Pirates Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with SABC confirming broadcast coverage.

According to the SABC schedule, the Soweto derby between Amakhosi and the Buccaneers will be televised live on SABC 1 at 15:30.

ORLANDO PIRATES ARE THE FAVOURITES

Amakhosi, currently sitting fourth in the Betway Premiership standings, will host second-placed Orlando Pirates in what promises to be another high-stakes chapter of South African football’s biggest rivalry.

The Glamour Boys, co-coached by Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaize, will be eager to bounce back after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC at the same venue earlier this week.

Across Soweto, the Sea Robbers also arrive wounded after a surprise Nedbank Cup last-16 exit to lower-division side Casric Stars, who advanced on penalties.

Beyond league points, Saturday’s derby carries pride, pressure and bragging rights, with momentum in the Betway Premiership title race also at stake as the season edges closer to May.

As the standings suggest, Orlando Pirates have enjoyed the stronger campaign so far, holding an eight-point advantage over their rivals. The Sea Robbers have already lifted two trophies this season, the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, both currently housed in Parktown.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have also impressed in front of goal, scoring 26 times in 17 league matches, making them the division’s second-highest scorers. Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, have managed 16 goals in 16 outings as they continue searching for greater attacking consistency.

KAIZER CHIEFS CURRENTLY OWNING THE BRAGGING RIGHTS

However, recent derby history offers Amakhosi encouragement. The Glamour Boys claimed victory in the previous meeting between the sides, last season’s Nedbank Cup final, where Yusuf Maart’s late strike secured the club’s first trophy in a decade.

Gaston Sirino had opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Evidence Makgopa produced a superb equaliser, but Maart ultimately had the final word at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, handing Chiefs silverware despite finishing ninth in the Betway Premiership just a week earlier.
