Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger suffered a late 1-0 defeat at St. Eloi Lupopo after the home side scored in injury-time via a Michael Kimputu penalty.
When it looked like the game would end in a draw, the home side received a late injury-time penalty, which was slotted home by Kimputu to hand the Limpopo their first win of the group stage.
The game was evenly poised for large parts of the match, but Mokwena’s side disappointed, creating just three shots over the 90 minutes compared to Lupopo’s 16.
Alger got punished late in the match, and are rooted at the bottom of Group C with just one point from three games, while Limpopo moved to four. At the top remain Sundowns with five, level with second-placed Al Hilal.
Mokwena’s side now face a must-win home clash against Lupopo next weekend in Algeria, where they need a win to keep their chances of qualifying for the next round.
Meanwhile, Sundowns will travel to Rwanda to face Al Hilal. The Sudanese giants play their home games in Rwanda, as they can’t play in Sudan due to the unsettlements in the country.
