Riveiro back in SA, will he reunite with Pirates players?

Posted on November 18, 2025

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed why he’s returned to South Africa.

The 50-year-old was the reason behind Orlando Pirates’ resurgence three years ago when he won five trophies with the Soweto giants.

He left his post in May to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly; however, things did not work out in Egypt, as he lasted less than 10 matches before he was given the boot.

Riveiro landed in South Africa this week and will be among the high-profile guests at the Carling Knockout Cup Campaign Media Update, which will take place next week.

“I’ve been part of the Black Label journey for three years already, two special ones in the last two years,” the former Pirates coach told SuperSport TV.

“And now I have the opportunity to be part of the brand for a couple of weeks to make sure that we have an exciting tournament in the end. That’s why.”

With Riveiro’s former team, Orlando Pirates, playing in the Carling Knockout Cup final on 06 December, it seemed very likely that the Spaniard might reunite with his former players.

Building up to the final, both Pirates and Marumo Gallants captains will be at the Carling Knockout Cup Campaign Media Update. Nkosinathi Sibisi, who was trusted by Riveiro, could reunite with his former coach.

During his tenure with the Buccaneers, the Spanish tactician coached 131 games, winning 82 and lifting five trophies. His former team will be in action against Gallants in two weeks at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It remains to be seen if Jose Riveiro will stick around for the final to see whether Pirates can lift the only domestic cup he failed to win in South Africa.

Do you think Riveiro will coach another SA club?
