Peter Shalulile scored his 130th PSL goal as Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways by defeating Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at Athlone Stadium to move to the top of the log with 11 points.
Meanwhile Steve Barker’s side dropped to 13th position on the table with four points both from five matches.
The home side had an early opportunity to get in the lead in the 11th minute when Khomotjo Lekoloane found Devin Titus but the latter missed the target.
Four minutes later it was the visitors’ turn when Kutlwano Letlhaku found Peter Shalulile but the Namibian was beaten to the ball by Sage Stephens.
In the 17th minute it was the Letlhaku-Shalulile partnership again where Shalulile was denied by the cross bar. But Shalulile’s persistence paid off at the stroke of half-time when he appeared to be fouled inside the box and his side was awarded a penalty. He stepped up and converted to hand Sundowns the lead at the break, scoring his 130th PSL goal to break Siyabonga Nomvethe’s record.
Sundowns made one change at the start of the second half, bringing on Iqraam Rayners for Arthur Sales, while there weren’t immediate changes for the home side.
Letlhaku had an opportunity to double his side’s lead in the 70th minute from an Aubrey Modiba pass but the youngster missed the target.
Stellies could have levelled with 10 minutes left on the regular clock but has his short saved by Ronwen Williams.
