R57 million Sundowns move opens up Kaizer Chiefs Pandora’s Box

Posted on January 7, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs would have striking options on the table after Sundowns finalised an eye-catching R57 million deal.

Brayan León has joined the PSL champions from Independiente Medellín in a deal worth up to [R57 million.

Sundowns break the bank for Colombian star Leon

The Betway Premiership champions have once again flexed their financial muscles with the acquisition of 25-year-old striker Brayan León. The deal will rise to R57 million. León is uncapped for his country. However, he has a handy tally of 78 direct goal contributions in 217 senior club appearances.

“After fullback Juan Arizala was sold to Udinese as revealed last week, Independiente Medellin is preparing one more sale,” Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano announced.

“Brayan Leon leaves the club to join Mamelodi Sundowns for a $3.5 million package plus a sell-on clause,” Romano added.

What does this mean for Kaizer Chiefs?

Sundowns’ new boy will expect game time from the start, regardless of how long he needs to settle in South Africa. Legendary marksman Peter Shalulile, now 34, is not a regular starter anymore. Chiefs could do a lot worse than make an audacious move for the prolific Namibian, provided he’s available. 106 goals and 26 assists from 219 Sundowns outings is some record.

Orlando Pirates’ Mabasa is still on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is at a crossroads, and his chances of game time will be reduced further by the arrival of Andre De Jong. Once the most lethal marksman in the country, he’s now playing second and even third fiddle to Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma. This fall down the pecking order also saw his chances of a Bafana Bafana recall go up in flames at an inopportune time. Mabasa’s only made five league appearances all season. Some fans seem happy to say goodbye, while others are concerned that Mabasa’s undoubted class will see him succeed at a club like Kaizer Chiefs.
