Pirates to sign PSL defender to replace Mbokazi?

Betway Premiership log-leaders Orlando Pirates are believed to be moving towards a new left-central defender.

According to the high-ranking source Unplayable, the Sea Robbers have set sights on Marumo Gallants’ 23-year-old Mpho Chabatsane.

MORE ABOUT HIM

With Mbekezeli Mbokazi gone to Chicago Fire in the United States of America, Orlando Pirates are now left with only right-footed central defenders.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou previously confirmed to the media that a left-footer in the heart of defence is key in his game.

“Of course, I like my game model to have a left-footer [defender] on left side in terms of the balance of the team in that position,” the Orlando Pirates mentor told journalists in December.

“It’s up to me to find solution to try replace him,” he added.

Having saved Gallants from relegation last season, coach Ouaddou is familiar with the Sea Robbers’ reported target Chabatsane.

Under Ouaddou, Chabatsane played four matches and registered an assist, though he featured at left-back, a position he executes with equal quality.

Hailing from Ga-Matlala, Limpopo, Chabatsane has 34 appearances in South Africa’s top-flight, with 17 games coming this term.

The 23-year-old, formerly with JDR Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, is yet to score but has two assists under his belt.

“UNPLAYABLE can exclusively reveal Orlando Pirates are chasing the signature of Marumo Gallants left back, Mpho Chabatsane (23), in this transfer window,” the report said.

EXISTING CENTRAL DEFENDERS AT ORLANDO PIRATES

In the meantime, the Sea Robbers have depth and quality in the heart of defenders, but none using the left foot. The list features Lebone Seema, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Olisa Ndah, Thabiso Sesane and Tapelo Xoki.
