Pirates superstar earns CAF nomination after just 7 months

Posted on October 23, 2025

Have we seen a better career start? Orlando Pirates star Mbekezeli Mbokazi was recognised by CAF just seven months after turning professional.

The 20-year-old has been nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award.

ORLANDO PIRATES STAR MBEKEZELI MBOKAZI EARNS CAF NOMINATION

The 20-year-old defender from Hluhluwe only made his professional debut in the final stretch of last season under then-coach Jose Riveiro.

Since that 1-0 win over Chippa United on 5 March 2025, the left-footed centre-back hasn’t looked back.

Mbokazi went on to captain South Africa’s U20 side to the COSAFA Championship title and played a key role as the Buccaneers finished second in the Betway Premiership. He also helped Orlando Pirates to reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals, where they narrowly lost to eventual winners Pyramids FC.

His rise continued on the international stage. At just 19, the former Langalibalele Academy star made his Bafana Bafana debut in a 2-0 win over Mozambique at Peter Mokaba Stadium in June, before going on to collect four caps. His standout performance against Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers earned him praise from all corners of Mzansi.

Now 20 and heading for his first AFCON in Morocco this December, the young Buccaneer’s nomination shows how far he’s come, from debutant to continental contender in less than a year.

In the meantime, Mbokazi and the Sea Robbers will prepare for the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary qualifiers against Saint-Eloi Lupopo. The game will be on Saturday at 15:00 at the Orlando Stadium.
