Pirates Open Gap On Sundowns

Posted on January 11, 2026

Orlando Pirates have opened a five-point gap on Mamelodi Sundowns after returning with a 3-0 win over AmaZulu in the DStv Diski Challenge.

The Buccaneers went into the season break with a slender two-point lead over Masandawana, despite winning 10 of their 13 games.

They have continued their fine form, beating Usuthu 3-0, thanks to goals by Thuto Sesipi, Simphiwe Masilele and Joy Manana.

Pirates opened the scoring after 17 minutes via Sesipi and had a chance to go with a two-goal lead into the break but MaƱana missed a penalty, which was saved by Lindani Nene.

However, a beautiful free-kick by Masilele after 64 minutes put Pirates on foot for three points before Manana redeemed himself in the 88th minute.

They have now opened a five-point gap to second-placed Sundowns, who have a game in hand and only play on Sunday against Sekhukhune United.

Other Saturday results:

  • Chippa 0-1 Orbit
  • TS Galaxy 1-2 Siwelele
  • Stellenbosch 3-0 Polokwane
