Orlando Pirates made it six wins in a row in the Betway Premiership to close their gap on Mamelodi Sundowns to just three points after beating Polokwane City 1-0 at Orlando Stadium.
The Buccaneers returned to winning ways after their 3-0 defeat in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round over St. Eloi Lupopo.
Tshepang Moremi opened the scoring after just five minutes, netting from close range after Brian Bwire failed to clear a cross.
Polokwane almost equalised after 32 minutes but a header by Sibusiso Tshabalala flew past Sipho Chaine’s goal.
Just two minutes later Patrick Maswanganyi almost doubled Pirates’ lead with a powerful shot after setting himself up with some fancy footwork but it just missed the target.
Sihle Nduli had another chance to make it 2-0 but his header following a corner missed the target as well.
Pirates continued to dominate proceeding, pushing for a second goal by Bwire came up with several great saves.
After 70 minutes, Maswanganyi again came close but the Rise and Shine shot stopper again denied hime, this time from close range.
The win saw Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men move to 18 points from eight games, just three behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played two more games.
