Orlando Pirates hero Riveiro returns to the country

Pirates fans love Jose Riveiro for his cup specialist antics in three glittering years at the club, where he scooped five pieces of major silverware. However, fans believe his influence stretched further than the first team.

“This is Riveiro’s legacy, quality youngsters at Pirates.”

This was the opinion of a fan on The South African while enjoying a piece on Pirates Diski Challenge prospect Mpho Padime, who is one of the more exciting prospects coming out of the Pirates Diski Challenge squad. In recent seasons, Pirates have been increasingly keen to blood youngsters. Mohau Nkota rose quickly to prominence before being sold to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, while Rele Mofokeng is regarded as the jewel in the club’s crown.

Jose Riveiro won five trophies with Pirates in just three seasons, winning 82 of 131 matches at the helm. The 50-year-old from Vigo in Spain is back on South African soil after a special invite by Carling Black Label for the Carling Knockout Cup final.

“I’ve been part of the Black Label journey for three years already, two special ones in the last two years,” he told SuperSport TV host Thomas Mlambo.

Orlando Pirates hit the top of the Betway Premiership table

Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad of 23, which faced Zambia in a recent friendly, contained eight Pirates players. No other PSL club had more representatives in the group. Oswin Appollis has quickly found his feet as a Sea Robber, scoring four times in all competitions and laying on six goals for teammates. Appollis is also a regular for South Africa, as is Evidence Makgopa. The pair were super-subs in a 2-0 win against Chippa, while Makgopa started and scored in another 2-0 success, this time against Durban City on Saturday. Appollis claimed an assist off the bench.
