Pirates eyeing top spot ahead of Chippa clash

Posted on November 25, 2025

“They are playing well. And they have exciting players one more time,” said Riveiro.

Orlando Pirates resume their Betway Premiership campaign with a clash against Chippa United at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening (kick-off is at 7.30pm).

After a poor start to the season where they suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening two matches, the Buccaneers are unbeaten in their last eight games. They have won seven of these matches and only drawn once and are currently second on the log table with 22 points, trailing leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by three points, but have two games in hand.

The Chilli Boys, on the other side, are currently at the bottom of the log standings, with just seven points from 12 games. Their poor run in the league has led the club to show two coaches, Sinethemba Badela and Luc Eymael, the exit door.

If Pirates win against Chippa on Tuesday night, they will join Sundowns at the top with 25 points, but will still have a game in hand over the Brazilians. As for Chippa, a victory against Pirates will see them move away from the bottom of the log table.

Riveiro backs Pirates to with league title

The Buccaneers are in a good position to launch a serious attack on the league title this season and their former coach Jose Riveiro believes that the Buccaneers can end their long league title drought this campaign. Pirates last won the league title in the 2011/12 season.

“They are playing well. And they have exciting players one more time,” said Riveiro.

“A good mix of experience and youngsters fighting for each and every title this season in the domestic competition. And I think they have a fantastic opportunity to fight for the league until the end. Hopefully, we can make it,” added the Spaniard before admitting that he is a Pirates “fan” and that he would never coach another team in South Africa other than Pirates.

The Spaniard has been linked with Pirates rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who are without a permanent head coach after axing Nasreddine Nabi over a month ago.

“I had the opportunity to be a Pirates’ coach for three seasons, and it was an incredible time of my life.

“I said already a long time ago that I am a Buccaneer, that’s it. My time in South Africa is done because, like I said, I will never work in another club, only Pirates,” concluded Riveiro.
