Pirates coach Ouaddou refuses to count chickens before they hatch

Posted on February 18, 2026

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou insists his side will not seal the Betway Premiership by just beating Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

The Buccaneers face off against the two rival teams this month, knowing a win in both matches could make their life easier at the top of the table. They currently sit top of the Betway Premiership with six points but could extend their lead to nine if they beat Sundowns on Wednesday.

Ouaddou was asked if winning against Downs and Chiefs will give them one hand on the trophy but the Pirates coach said it was too early crown any team champions.

”I’ll answer you with a one French saying that we don’t have to sell the bear’s skin before the bear is killed,” he said, which means they must not count on an outcome before it has actually materialised.

Pirates have looked unbeatable under Ouaddou this season, only losing three times in 29 matches across all competitions.

“We play games after games, we know exactly what we want, we know which target we want to reach.

“But we don’t have to think about what happened in three, four months. We just have one vision.

“We need to go step by step, it’s very important to get much by much,” the Moroccan coach added.

Ouaddou has already won two cups at Pirates

The Buccaneers have 14 league matches remaining, and wins over their rivals could see them edge closer to winning their first league title in over a decade.

With two trophies won, a treble is on the cards for the ‘Happy People’ it seems.

Can Pirates win the league?
