Petersen On Maart’s Departure & Leadership

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has explained the leadership roles at the club after the departure of last season’s captain Yusuf Maart.

Maart was Chiefs’ captain last season and became the first captain to lift the trophy for Amakhosi in the last 10 years, the cherry on top was that he scored the winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.

Petersen emphasized that Maart was a good leader and had a good relationship with the players and also mentioned that his departure means they have to carry on being leaders in their different ways with Inacio Miguel being the current Chiefs captain.

“I think there are quite a few leaders in the team. I mean, guys lead in different ways—some lead by example, some lead by word of mouth. So, I think we have quite a few different characters, different leaders in the group,” Petersen told the media.

“I think Yusuf was a great leader. He’s been with the team for a while, and he has a good relationship with some, with most of the players. So, I think with him going, I mean, it’s a good move for him you always want to see your fellow teammates and players, taking that next step in their careers.

“So, I think it’s a good move for him in terms of leadership in the team. I mean, Miguel is a natural leader. And I think he leads by action. You can see the way he plays, the way he conducts himself, and there are a lot of guys that look up to him in terms of it.

“So, I think within the team we have, we have quite a few good, solid leaders. And I think the important thing is for us as leaders, to come together and just try and stay focused, and guide the younger ones, and, when we see that things are not going the way they’re supposed to go, it’s for us to put our brands and try and realign everything.”
