Petersen Hailed For Improvement After Impressive Start

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has heaped praise of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and coach Ilyes Mzoughi after an impressive start to the 2025/26 season.

The goalkeeping position at Chiefs has been hotly debated and a position highly scrutinised post the Itumeleng Khune era, with Petersen actually being replaced by the signing of Fiacre Ntwari and then Bruce Bvuma becoming number one at some point last season.

However, he’s worked his way back into the starting XI and has kept two clean sheets in the 2-0 win over Stellenbosch and 1-0 win over Polokwane City in a positive start to the new league campaign.

“I think we must congratulate coach Ilyes Mzoughi, the improvement of Petersen has been very good, we’re all talking of the performances of Petersen, with two clean sheets I think we cannot change Petersen,” Ben Youssef stated when asked about his displays by iDiski Times.

“He’s been ready, he helped the team against Stellenbosch with three or four saves – against Polokwane City he was reliable, his attitude is good, and we have to say congratulations to Petersen first and coach Ilyes’ for his work with Petersen.

“Last season there was a lot of criticism about our goalkeepers, but we have proved that everything, with work, when you work hard, it’s possible [to improve].”

The 30-year-old has kept 20 clean sheets in 50 games for Chiefs since joining the club from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2021.
