Mamelodi Sundowns continued with their unbeaten start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season with a 2-0 victory over Magesi FC on Wednesday night.

But the night’s biggest celebration belonged to striker Peter Shalulile, who equalled Siyabonga Nomvethe’s all-time goal-scoring record in South Africa’s top-flight era.

The Namibian forward netted his 129th top-flight goal, drawing level with Nomvethe as the joint all-time top scorer in the PSL era.

A Milestone Goal

Shalulile scored the second goal in Mamelodi Sundowns’ comfortable win after Jayden Adams opened the scoring.

While the three points were important for Msandawana, the bigger spotlight was on Shalulile, whose goal saw historic cheers ring out at Loftus Versfeld.

Breaking Down the Numbers

Here’s how Peter Shalulile’s 129 top-flight goals are distributed:

By Club:

  • Highlands Park: 27 goals
  • Mamelodi Sundowns: 102 goals

By Competition:

  • League: 90
  • Nedbank Cup: 14
  • MTN8: 4
  • League Cup: 2
  • CAF Competitions: 19
    • 18 in the CAF Champions League
    • 1 in the African Football League

Favourite Opponents:

  • Kaizer Chiefs: 10 goals
  • Golden Arrows: 10
  • TS Galaxy: 9
  • Royal AM: 7

Goal-Scoring Rate: Shalulile vs Nomvethe

While they now share the goal tally at the top, Shalulile edges Nomvethe in goals-per-game ratio:

  • Shalulile: 0.44 goals per game
  • Nomvethe: 0.41 goals per game

This highlights Shalulile’s clinical consistency since his arrival in the PSL, first with Highlands Park and now with the Brazilians.

What’s Next?

Now level with one of South African football’s greats, the next goal Shalulile scores will set a new record and etch his name permanently in local football history.

That could come as soon as Saturday, 23 August when Mamelodi Sundowns host Orlando Pirates in the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final.

Failing that, Mamelodi Sundowns’ next Betway Premiership clash is against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, 27 August.

Mamelodi Sundowns fans and neutrals alike will be watching closely as Shalulile attempts to become the PSL era’s undisputed top scorer in the upcoming fixtures.
