‘Orlando Pirates will regret selling Mabasa’

Posted on December 29, 2025

News of a potential move away from Orlando Pirates to Kaizer Chiefs for Tshegofatso Mabasa has drawn some mixed attention online.

The 29-year-old striker is out of favour with the Sea Robbers.

Orlando Pirates consider selling Mabasa to Kaizer Chiefs

Tshegofatso Mabasa is at a crossroads. Once the most lethal marksman in the country, he’s now playing second and even third fiddle to Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma. This fall down the pecking order also saw his chances of a Bafana Bafana recall go up in flames at an inopportune time. Mabasa’s only made five league appearances all season. Fans are divided on the issue. Some seem happy to say goodbye, while others are concerned that Mabasa’s undoubted class will see him succeed at a club like Kaizer Chiefs.

Orlando Pirates to bag De Jong and other headline signings

29-year-old New Zealander Andre de Jong is on the brink of sealing a switch from Stellenbosch to the Sea Robbers. He could be one of THREE headline arrivals. Known for his tactical intelligence and work ethic, he operates best just behind a striker. This now makes a move for an out-and-out striker less likely. Evidence Makgopa is currently the first choice for club and country, while Yanela Mbuthuma is a capable backup.

There’s also a 17-year-old nicknamed ‘Messi’ catching the eye of Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Bafana Bafana vs Zimbabwe key details in AFCON crunch clash

Monday 29 December is the date to put in the diary. Zimbabwe vs South Africa kicks off at 18:00 SA time.

Permutations

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana needs a point from their battle with Zimbabwe on matchday 3 of AFCON in order to guarantee qualification for the Round of 16, provided that Egypt avoids defeat against Angola. If Bafana loses, they’ll then rely on being one of the four best third-placed teams to seal their passage to the Round of 16. Hugo Broos’ men lost 1-0 to Egypt in a match containing several contentious decisions. Egypt won and scored a dubious penalty in first-half stoppage time. South Africa was denied what seemed a certain penalty in the dying embers of the second half.
