Orlando Pirates to welcome to new faces in January

Posted on December 21, 2025

Orlando Pirates could welcome two new players in January as they look to strengthen their squad.

Following the departure of Mbekezeli Mbokazi, many expected the Buccaneers to bolster their defence; however, they are instead focusing on attacking reinforcements.

The club is set to sign Stellenbosch FC attacker Andre de Jong, while Sfiso Luthuli is being promoted from within the academy.

Luthuli has developed significantly since joining the Buccaneers’ academy at the age of 17. He showcased his talent as part of the Bucs Reserves and was one of the standout players in the DStv Diski Challenge during the 2019/20 season.

Pirates to add depth to their squad in January

Additionally, his loan spells at Pele Pele and Pretoria Callies contributed to his growth as a player, and he consistently remained a key scorer.

Luthuli was included in the Pirates’ squad for the 2025/26 season and made his debut in the Carling Black Label Cup, where he scored in the final.

De Jong has been linked with Orlando Pirates for several weeks, and reports suggest that his signing is imminent, with an official announcement expected in January.

With Evidence Makgopa participating in the African Cup of Nations and Tshegofatso Mabasa unavailable, De Jong will primarily compete for a spot with Yanela Mbuthuma and Luthuli when the league resumes.

Notably, he plays a different role compared to the current strikers at Pirates.

The Buccaneers have won three trophies this season and currently sit top of the Betway Premiership.
