Orlando Pirates star compared to the world’s greatest players

Posted on September 20, 2025

Tshegofatso Mabasa is turning heads at Orlando Pirates, and not just for his goals.

The 28-year-old forward’s mindset and work ethic have earned him high praise from former Buccaneers striker Lehlohonolo Majoro, who believes Mabasa’s hunger mirrors the mentality of global icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

ORLANDO PIRATES STRIKER RECOGNISED

Majoro has highlighted the forward’s relentless drive to improve, his “never-die” attitude, and his determination to break club records.

“Tshegofatso Mabasa is another player who has a history of his own,” Majoro told FARPosts’ Mauwane Raophala. “He was the top goal scorer of the team last season and is not far from breaking Benedict Vilakazi’s record as the club’s all-time top goal scorer. These are the players you know have the drive to do better.

“I listened to an interview where he said he wants to score more goals than he did last season.

“That, on its own, is a sign of a player who is not satisfied with his achievements, and those are the mentalities of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi—always challenging themselves to do better than they did in the previous season,” the former Orlando Pirates goal-poacher concluded.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE KICKS OFF AGAINST LIOLI

Orlando Pirates are shifting focus to continental football this weekend as they kick off their CAF Champions League campaign.

The Sea Robbers face Lesotho’s reigning champions, Lioli, in the preliminary round at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday at 15:00, before returning to Soweto for the second leg next weekend.

With an exciting squad and momentum from their MTN8 triumph, Orlando Pirates will be looking to make a statement on the African stage.
