Orlando Pirates news wrap: Makgopa’s mettle, Foster regrets

Posted on October 29, 2025

Today’s Orlando Pirates news wrap looks at the club’s continued excellence in the cups and potential regrets over how Lyle Foster left.

Pirates are into the Telkom Knockout semis thanks to heroics from Evidence Makgopa and Tshepang Moremi.

Makgopa steps up to the plate for Orlando Pirates

Despite not being a regular starter for Bafana, Evidence Makgopa is proving time and again that he’s the man for the big occasion at Pirates. The Sea Robbers suffered a late scare to secure their place in the Telkom Knockout semis with a 2-1 win over Magesi, with the goals coming from in-form winger Tshepang Moremi and Makgopa.

Foster has found his level in the Premier League

Pirates cashed in on Lyle Foster when he was still a raw, talented teenager, selling him to Ligue 1’s Monaco for €1.2m (R24m) in 2019. They probably didn’t expect his price tag to inflate as much as it did. Foster is now the most expensive South African player in history after an €11m (R220m) move from Belgian side Westerlo to Burnley in 2023. It’s easy to imagine that he could fetch an even bigger fee if the Clarets sell him in a couple of years. Could Pirates have fetched a bigger fee for Foster when he was a teenager and they sold the player to France’s Ligue 1?
