Orlando Pirates: New coach, new captain, new problems

Orlando Pirates appear to have a big problem this season, having won just once in four matches.

Under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers have signed 12 new players and that appears to have halted their progress somewhat. Under Jose Riveiro, Pirates had a strong starting eleven which dominated most matches.

Last season, the Soweto giants reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League and also finished runners-up in the Betway Premiership.

Ouaddou’s changes hurting Orlando Pirates

With Mohau Nkota having left for Saudi and Monnapule Saleng loaned out, the Buccaneers had to look for a new right winger. Tshepang Moremi and Kamogelo Sebelebele were signed to replace the duo. Moremi has yet to deliver, while the former impressed against Mamelodi Sundowns.

In terms of leadership, Pirates appointed Nkosinathi Sibisi as their captain, replacing Innocent Maela, who has since retired. Mbekezile Mbokazi was named as Sibisi’s vice, despite the defender only making his professional football debut this year.

Can Orlando Pirates turn things around?

With changes happening, it would be difficult for the team to start winning again. With the new coach preferring his own style and fielding most of the new players in his starting eleven, it will take time for the team to combine and get on with Ouaddou’s philosophy.

Against Sundowns in the MTN8, the Orlando Pirates coach fielded Riveiro’s trusted team with the exception of a few players. The Buccaneers played their best football of the season especially in the second half.

Can Pirates return to winning ways?
