Orlando Pirates in Talks to Appoint Rulani Mokwena as New Head Coach

Posted on June 13, 2025

Orlando Pirates have opened negotiations with Rulani Mokwena to take over as the club’s new head coach, according to sources close to the deal.

The Buccaneers are moving swiftly to finalize the appointment, hoping to have Mokwena in place before the team departs for their preseason camp in Spain. The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor is currently available after his recent departure from the Tshwane giants.

Mokwena’s potential return to Pirates – where he previously served as assistant coach – would mark a significant coup for the Soweto club as they look to mount a stronger title challenge next season. His tactical acumen and knowledge of the local game make him a prime candidate for the vacancy.

The move comes as Pirates prepare for a crucial preseason, with the club aiming to hit the ground running in the 2024/25 campaign. Should the deal be completed, Mokwena would immediately begin work on implementing his philosophy and preparing the squad for their Spanish training camp.

Club officials remain tight-lipped about the negotiations, but insiders suggest an announcement could be imminent as Pirates look to resolve their coaching situation ahead of the new season.
