Orlando Pirates could open a six point gap over Sundowns

Posted on February 1, 2026

Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 victory over Magesii FC has put them in a strong position as they aim to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns.

For the past decade, Sundowns have dominated the Betway Premiership, winning the league eight consecutive times.

During this period, the Buccaneers have finished as runners-up on four occasions, and they have experienced the heartbreak of losing the title on the final day just once.

This season, the Brazilians have been clinical, allowing teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to challenge them for supremacy. Despite their current struggles, Sundowns remain at the top of the standings, primarily due to their superior goal difference.

Orlando Pirates have a significant advantage over Sundowns

The Buccaneers will play two league matches before their highly anticipated clash with Sundowns on February 18.

Additionally, under the management of Miguel Cardoso, Pirates have two more matches in the CAF Champions League group stage and a fixture in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 to prepare for.

During the three weeks leading up to their matchup, Sundowns won’t be competing in the league, while Orlando Pirates will have two opportunities to secure victories in the Betway Premiership.

If they win both matches, the Soweto giants could go six points ahead of the Brazilians before their encounter at the Orlando Stadium.

A victory against the defending champions would give Orlando Pirates a nine-point lead over Sundowns, placing them in an excellent position to win their first league title in 14 years.

Can the Buccaneers go on and win the league?
