Official: Man United Announce New Manager

Posted on January 14, 2026

Manchester United have announced former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 44-year-old English emerged as the odds-on favourite, seeing off another United great in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to return to Old Trafford after showing interest in the vacant role following the sudden sacking of Ruben Amorim last week Monday.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team until the end of the 2025/26 season,” the club stated.

“Carrick played 464 games for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

“He joined the first-team coaching staff when he retired in 2018 and served under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Following Solskjaer’s departure, Carrick led the club with distinction during his role as caretaker manager.”

Carrick’s return marks an emotional one for a man who spent 12 years at United as a player and then a brief caretaker role in 2021.

The Old Trafford outfit agreed all terms of his short-term contract and also his backroom staff comprised of Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.

Darren Fletcher, who had briefly taken over the senior side for three matches after Amorim’s departure, has returned to United’s U18 coach role after helping as caretaker manager last week.
