Nuno Santos Reveals Why He Joined Sundowns

Posted on November 24, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos has explained why he joined the club and how the head coach Miguel Cardoso influenced the move.

Sundowns completed the signing of Santos in August from a Portuguese side Vitoria SC, with his signing seen as a coup after the midfielder has been playing at the highest level of club football like the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

The 26-year-old hit the ground running at Sundowns, scoring three goals so far, all coming in the CAF Champions League. After his stellar performance in Sundowns’ 3-1 win over St. Eloi Lupopo Santos explained why he joined Masandawana.

“It is the biggest [club] in the country and one of the biggest in Africa,” he said.

“I felt like the club really wanted me [and] when you know that, it’s easy to me make that decision.”

Santos also explained how his countryman Cardoso played a crucial role in him coming to South Africa.

“He has influence for sure because it’s easier when you’re in Portugal, Europe there’s not so many players that come to South Africa and have a Portuguese coach that speaks the same language,” he stated.

“He can advise me, how the things are.”
