Nthethe Secures New Coaching Role

Posted on February 6, 2026

Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thabo Nthethe has been appointed head coach of the U17 squad in the Siwelele Academy.

The 41-year-old who had been working in the second-tier with Casric Stars has returned to the Free State, where his legendary Premier Soccer League took off, during a decade long stint at the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.

Known as ‘Mr Cool’, Nthethe was a unique, modern centre back with composure and the ability to play out of defence with ease, which saw him break into the senior national team and eventually earn a move to Mamelodi Sundowns – where he was part of the 2016 CAF Champions League triumph.

Siwelele confirmed Nthethe forms part of their new-look academy staff, with Mike Sebola and Lebo Lebese with the U14s and U15s respectively.
