Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen still does not have a new contract, with less than six months remaining on his current deal.
The 31-year-old has taken over as the first-choice goalkeeper from Bruce Bvuma this season, and he has recorded six clean sheets. Petersen is also in contention for the Goalkeeper of the Season award.
Petersen is not the only player at Kaizer Chiefs with a contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Six other players are in the same situation, and reports indicate that the Soweto giants are not in a rush to extend any contracts at this time.
Petersen’s agent Glynn Binkin told Soccer Laduma that the keeper’s contract has a clause which allows him an option to extend by another year.
“In terms of Brandon (Petersen), we are in discussions with them,” Glynn Binkin, Petersen’s agent, the agent told Soccer Laduma.
“They have an option [clause] anyway on the existing contract. So it’s finishing on 30th June 2026, but they have an option for a year. But we are speaking about a new contract for him anyway.”
Kaizer Chiefs not talking about any contract
Bruce Bvuma, Dillan Solomons, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Pule Mmodi are out of contracts by the end of June.
It remains to be seen if Amakhosi will retain all of them next season. Mthethwa and Petersen are more likely to stay, given their performance this season, while Ngcobo and Mmodi could face the chop unless they improve dramatically in the second half of the season.
With head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s contract getting terminated in October, Kaizer Chiefs are looking to go a different route next season and might not need at least 10 players next season if the club fails to improve.
