‘Nabi failed but there’s something Chiefs is not telling us’

Posted on September 21, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio dos Santos feels Amakhosi has not been very transparent regarding the Nasreddine Nabi situation.

The club stated on Friday regarding the Tunisian coach, and in the statement, it was confirmed that Nabi was not part of the technical team nor with the team. Although many reports confirmed that the Amakhosi coach has left the club, no official comment has been made by Chiefs.

Amakhosi travelled to Angola to play Kabuscorp without their head coach. Nabi’s assistants, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze were on the touchline as Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.

“We still don’t know for sure what the issue is or why Nabi is no longer with Chiefs,” Dos Santos told KickOff.

“Was his wife unwell, and did he need to return to her? Yes, that is true; she was unwell, and he did need to return to her. Is it still so serious that he wants to go back to her? We don’t know. Is it about the coaching license they are discussing? That’s just nonsense.

“I presume there must be a problem, but no one is telling us what it is. When Nabi came back, he was not the same on the sideline. He gave the impression that he might not be fully present. Perhaps the situation with his wife was very serious. There is more happening that we are unaware of,” added Dos Santos.

Before the Betway Premiership, Nabi left Chiefs for two weeks to attend to his wife, who was involved in an accident. During his absence, Ben Youssef led the team to three successive wins. Dos Santos feeld Nabi has not done much to improve the team in the 14 matches in charge.

“People come to Chiefs without realising how big this team is. It is akin to Manchester United in England. You can’t make excuses about not having the players. If you take the job, you should expect it to be a substantial responsibility.

“Now the club has invested in many new players, changed the squad, and supported him, but I’m not convinced that he has successfully managed the team. Nabi has failed at Chiefs. I say this because, just like last season, there is still no consistency,” Dos Santos added.

“You can’t play against Sekhukhune United, go 1-0 down, equalise to make it 1-1, and then lose 3-1. Look at the players’ reactions and the changes that are made, and you start to question why the team appears so different from the last one or two matches.

“There is something that you and I don’t know, and that’s because the club is not communicating anything.”

Nabi has struggled for consistent results since joining Chiefs but was successful in ending their trophy drought in May.

Where should Nabi go?
