‘My wishes for Khanyisa at Chiefs’

Posted on December 7, 2025

Khanyisa Mayo’s Kaizer Chiefs career has began with a one goal in five outings.

His father, formely a striker for the same Soweto giants, has spoken from the heart about his son Khanyisa’s journey with Amakhosi, and his wish is simple: goals and trophies.

PATRICK MAYO ON HIS SON’S CAREER WITH KAIZER CHIEFS

Mayo senior, who played for the Glamour Boys between 2003 and 2007, was known for his versatility and goal-scoring. He arrived as a striker but later shifted to defence, becoming a reliable figure in several
league and cup-winning campaigns. After leaving Amakhosi, he turned out for Thanda Royal
Zulu before hanging up his boots in 2011.

Asked for his expecation on Khanyisa’s Chiefs career, he said: “For him to score goals. For him to win trophies,” Mayo said on PrimeSportsWithMahlatse. “I wish for him to solve the team’s problem of lacking goals.

“Scoring goals and winning trophies, that would be nice. I’m confident he’s going to win trophies. Even if it’s not with Chiefs, but personally, he will.”

‘I WANT HIM TO BE BETTER THAN ME’

His son Khanyisa, born in Mthatha and raised in Gqeberha, joined Amakhosi on loan from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad in August. The younger Mayo made a promising start, scoring once in his first four games before being sidelined by injury.

In a light moment, the host couldn’t resist jokingly asking if the younger Mayo is better than his dad.
“He must be better than me,” Mayo Sr replied with a grin. “Uyayazi kaloku [You know how it is],
he’s always bragging that he’s better than me, and I like that. I want him to be better than
myself,” the former Chiefs footballer concluded.
