Mvala On AFCON Absence & World Cup Ambitions

Posted on January 4, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has opened up on missing AFCON and discussed the 2026 FIFA World Cup dream.

The 31-year-old centre-back was a key member of the Bafana Bafana side that helped secure a bronze medal at the last tournament.

Mvala struggled with injuries towards the end of the last season and into the current campaign. He is still recovering after he went under the knife.

He says he was eager to be part of the squad in Morocco, revealing the team had promised each other they would win AFCON after falling short in the semi-finals last time, and he wished Hugo Broos’ side well.

“I’m not there because of the injury, I really wanted to be there, but God decided otherwise,” said Mvala on Mamelodi Sundowns TV.

“But I wish the boys the best of luck, I know that they will make the country proud.

“When we spoke after the game against Nigeria [in the last AFCON], we were like guys when we come back, we will win this thing.”

Mvala says his priority is fully recovering from injury as he has set sights on a place in the World Cup squad set to take place in June across the USA, Mexico and Canada.

“The main focus is to heal and hopefully make it to the World Cup,” he added.
