Monnapule Saleng’s first words as a Sundowns player

Posted on January 17, 2026

After making just two signings in the previous transfer window, Sundowns have made a big splash in the current market opening.

Colombian striker Brayan Leon has been signed, as well as Khulumani Ndamane of TS Galaxy and Bafana Bafana fame.

The third and biggest arrival is of course, Saleng. The Bloemhof-born winger arrives after a short but legendary chapter with the Sea Robbers.

In just 70 appearances for the Buccaneers, Saleng delivered 25 goals and 17 assists.

Under Jose Riveiro, he quickly earned the tag of a cup specialist, playing a decisive role in four of the five major trophies Orlando Pirates lifted during that period. Three MTN8 titles. Two Nedbank Cups.

The individual recognition followed. Saleng walked away with the MTN8 Last Man Standing award and later claimed the DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season.

He sealed his move to Mamelodi Sundowns last week, following a loan spell at Orbit College.

“I thank God for this opportunity and everything he has done for me,” Saleng told Downs’ Pitchside Podcast.

“He has given me another chance to play for a big team after my previous experiences. Being here feels great, and the welcome has also been wonderful.

“I love competition because it determines your level. In big teams, competition will always be there. At Pirates, there was competition, and I had to wait for my chance and got it,” Saleng added.

“I must work hard for the coach to select me. Just because I come from Pirates my place is not guaranteed. I must work hard to make it onto the coach’s matchday list,” the new Sundowns attacker added.
