Mngqithi on Chiefs Clash Poor Officiating, Calls For VAR

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has cried fouls about poor officiating during the Kaizer Chiefs clash, joining the VAR debate.

Abafana Bes’thende suffered a 1-0 loss to Amakhosi during their Betway Premiership clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this past Saturday.

Mngqithi feels his team should’ve been awarded a penalty after two Chiefs players, Thabiso Monyane and Inacio Miguel, brought down Arrows forward Sabelo Sithole.

He also believes VAR is needed to combat the league’s persistent poor officiating.

“I wouldn’t want to use the penalty incident as the deciding factor [of the game] because I also felt we could have scored,” Mngqithi said.

“The shot that Sithole got in that counter-attack, that was a very good chance. The cross that was played by [Luthando Ndlovu] to [Junior] Dion that hit the post was another good chance.

“If you take such, then the penalty becomes an added goal to what you would have created. The only sad thing is that sometimes when you look at decisions of penalties and fouls in the PSL, we are not winning much without VAR.”

Mngqithi argues that poor refereeing decisions that go against smaller clubs, such as Arrows, do not receive sufficient attention.

“You can say whatever you want to say but without VAR, we are exposed because decisions are taken and we move on. It’s Golden Arrows anyway. Nobody talks, but if it’s somebody else, maybe something happens,” he continued.

“But the honest truth, the referees have been given this carte blanche way of doing what they want. Even if the decision is atrocious, it’s okay.

“It just depends who was beaten on the day, if it’s somebody who is bigger than the other in animal farm, it would be an issue. If it happens against a team like [Arrows]  it’s okay tomorrow is another day, life must go on.

“Unfortunately we lost the match. Now, you complain about penalties, can you stop it please.”
