Mngqithi, Khanye slams officials after Kaizer Chiefs win

Posted on January 21, 2026

Manqoba Mngqithi was left frustrated after Kaizer Chiefs controversial goal against Golden Arrows on Tuesday evening.

Amakhosi scored the only goal of the match six minutes before half-time but replays show that Aden McCarthy was in an offside position when he scored the goal.

Mngxithi called for VAR after his side suffered defeat at the FNB Stadium.

“The first thing I can tell is that the PSL will forever have issues for as long as this issue of VAR is not taken care of,” he told SuperSport TV.

“The stakes are very high. We work very hard to build our teams. If you want to see that this goal was offside, just wait for the touch that goes to Silva and already McCarthy is on the other side, he’s offside.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach has called for VAR to be implemented after being on the receiving end of a bad referee call.

“But the reality is the league must very hard on VAR, the game has become too dynamic.

“It’s not us, it’s the game that should tell us that it’s too difficult even for the officials to follow and track the runs of the players, because I cannot always blame the officials – the game itself has become too dynamic and it demands that we have to respond to that.”

Mngqithi felt the PSL should invest in VAR before more matches get decided by bad calls

“We are not playing for R500 000 here, we are playing for R20 million. So we should consider looking into this thing of VAR otherwise we will keep losing matches like this and people will be ok with it.”

Mngqithi did not blame his players for the loss, but said Kaizer Chiefs won due to an offside goal.

“We lost another game because of an offside goal,” he continued.

“That does not make me feel good. When we lose matches, people sing like this that they have won a match, but the reality is we won the match against the laws of the game.”

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye felt Mngqithi’s side deserved to get a draw out of the match.

“Let’s start with the goal, for me, it’s clear offside,” he said on iDiski TV.

“The linesman was on the line when the setpiece was played, so the question is, how did he fail to spot it? Maybe he got confused because the ball touched one player before McCarthy scored.”
