Miguel Cardoso: Sundowns Gained Global Recognition at Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns may have bowed out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, but coach Miguel Cardoso believes the team earned something more valuable than progression – worldwide recognition.

“We played beautiful football but leave with nothing tangible, because the opposition was simply stronger,” Cardoso admitted after their final group match.

The Portuguese tactician highlighted the team’s progress: “Last Club World Cup we suffered two defeats. This time we got one win, one draw and one loss. Could we have done better? Always. But tonight we can sleep peacefully – I’m proud of my players and staff.”

Cardoso made a bold prediction about their campaign’s legacy: “The recognition is achieved. In ten years’ time, people will truly understand the significance of what we accomplished here today.”

While disappointed with the early exit, Sundowns’ improved performance against elite global opposition suggests growing continental stature for the South African champions.
