Middendorp Breaks Silence After Badela Exit

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp has clarified that he is not interested in coaching Durban City after the exit of Sinethemba Badela.

Middendorp, who currently works as Technical Director at the club, returned to his role in December after initially leaving midway through the first half when Gavin Hunt was still head coach.

However, Middendorp returned after Hunt left, with Badela appointed as head coach in December. But there were rumours the German could now himself return to the dugout after Badela left the club after just three games.

The 67-year-old, though, has ruled himself out of the position.

“I was not connected to Durban City FC at the time the club released Gavin Hunt at the end of November 2025; I left the club in the end of September 2025,” he wrote on LinkedIn via a “clarification statement”.

“Officially I joined Durban City FC on 15 December 2025 in the role of Technical Director again. I have no interest in, nor have I pursued, the position of Head Coach at Durban City FC.

“There has never been any intention or scenario in which I would follow Themba Badela in the Head Coach role.

“Throughout my tenure, I have fully supported the Head Coach, both professionally and structurally, in line with my mandate as Technical Director and in the best interests of the club.”
