Kaizer Chiefs star Mduduzi Shabalala is aiming for a regular spot in the Bafana Bafana squad after being called up for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The 21-year-old was named in the final 23-man squad to face Lesotho and Nigeria, having made the cut from the 48-man preliminary team.
His selection comes after an impressive start to the 2025/26 season with Amakhosi who have been in magnificent form so far, winning four and drawing one of first five league games.
Shabalala beholds his national team call-up as a massive opportunity and is determined to help the country qualify for the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
“I think it’s a big for opportunity for us and for us in our careers. It’s everyone’s dream to play for this country,” Shabalala said.
“We’re also here to help the team to win the games and qualify for the World Cup.”
Despite the stiff competition from experienced players, Shabalala is determined to secure a permanent spot in Hugo Broos’ Bafana squad.
“I think to be where I am now the next step is to work hard and retain my position in this team cause obviously it’s not easy,” he added.
“There are players who have more experience, I can say who are better than us [new faces in the team] and we need to show and play our part as players so we can be here in the next camp.”
