Mamelodi Sundowns striker breaks silence on future amid exit talk

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Abubeker Nasir has confirmed he’s in active discussions with Masadawana regarding his next move, with the striker making it clear that he’s desperate to return to action, even if it means leaving Chloorkop.

The Ethiopian forward has endured a frustrating spell in South African football. Last season, he didn’t feature in any competitive matches during his loan stint at SuperSport United. The club de-registered him in January due to persistent injury setbacks.

“I’m at home training alone and without any pain on the ankle injury which made me not play,” Nasir said, as per Kick Off. “Maybe I will go to another club. I don’t know but I want to play football.”

Sundowns growing impatient

Nasir’s time at Sundowns has failed to deliver the impact the club initially hoped for. Despite signing a five-year deal in January 2022, he has only managed 17 appearances and scored four goals.

Sundowns sent him back to Ethiopian Coffee on loan for six months shortly after his arrival, hoping he would regain sharpness. However, his Chloorkop return has brought limited success.

For all his promise, the 25-year-old appears to have tested the patience of the Sundowns technical team.

Nasir keen to revive career

The striker insists he’s now fully fit and eager to prove himself.

“This season I want to play football and which team it is it doesn’t matter,” he declared. “We are in discussions with Sundowns because I’m now back in Johannesburg after spending time at home in Ethiopia during the off-season.”

Despite his setbacks, Nasir still caught the eye during the March FIFA window. He started both of Ethiopia’s World Cup qualifiers and netted three goals, showcasing the quality that once made him one of the most exciting prospects in East African football.

No return to training yet as club considers

Nasir remains under contract with Sundowns but has not rejoined the squad since their return to pre-season training last week.

With competition stiff at Chloorkop and his injury history a lingering concern. A move elsewhere, permanent or loan, could offer the fresh start he craves.

Sundowns now face a decision.

Give the talented but injury-plagued Mamelodi Sundowns forward another shot, or move on?
