Mamelodi Sundowns Rulani Mokwena CAF Champions League

Posted on November 3, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns have learned their opponents for the CAF Champions League group stages, as the Pretoria giants prepare for another push for continental glory.

Masandawana will be South Africa’s only representative in this year’s competition after Orlando Pirates were eliminated by St. Eloi Lupopo on penalties in the qualifying rounds.

After reaching the final last season, Mamelodi Sundowns were placed in Pot 1, ensuring they avoided fellow African powerhouses Al Ahly, ES Tunis, and RS Berkane in the group stage draw.

Reunion

The draw placed Masandawana in Group C, setting up a reunion with former coach Rulani Mokwena, who’s now in charge of Algerian side MC Alger.

They will also face Lupopo, who ended the Buccaneers’ campaign, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the group.

The fourth and final side in the group is Al Hilal SC from Sudan.

The top two sides in each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals.

The CAF Champions League group stage is expected to kick off later in November, with Mamelodi Sundowns aiming to go one better than last season – when they lost to Egyptian side Pyramids in the final – and claim their second continental title.
