Mamelodi Sundowns Exit Club World Cup But Pocket R228 Million

Posted on June 26, 2025

Despite crashing out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Mamelodi Sundowns will return home with a hefty R228 million payout from their campaign in the USA.

The Brazilians were eliminated after a goalless draw against Fluminense in their final Group F match, a result that left them third in the group with four points—just short of qualification. Borussia Dortmund topped the group with seven points, while Fluminense advanced with five.

Though Sundowns earned more points than any other African team at the tournament, their journey ended in the group stage. However, their financial rewards remain substantial:

  • Participation fee: R174 million

  • Win over Ulsan Hyundai: R36 million

  • Draw vs Fluminense: R18 million

  • Total earnings: R228 million

While the early exit will sting, the massive payout provides some consolation—and valuable experience—for Masandawana as they shift focus back to domestic and continental competitions.
