Mamelodi Sundowns Consider Offloading Struggling Argentine Midfielder Matías Esquivel

Posted on May 20, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns are weighing up another loan move for Argentine midfielder Matías Esquivel, whose time at the club has been underwhelming since his January 2024 arrival from Club Atlético Lanús.

In an attempt to revive his form, Esquivel was loaned to Argentine side Talleres de Córdoba at the start of the season, but he returned to Sundowns three months ago. Despite the recall, the 26-year-old has barely featured, making just one substitute appearance in the Betway Premiership—a brief cameo in February’s 3-0 win over SuperSport United.

Before his loan spell, Esquivel managed only nine league appearances for Sundowns, scoring once. The creative midfielder was initially seen as a promising signing but has failed to deliver on expectations.

A club insider revealed that Sundowns are now considering parting ways with Esquivel, either through a permanent transfer or another loan deal.

“The move hasn’t worked out as planned, similar to Erwin Saavedra’s situation,” the source told Mgosi Squad.

With Sundowns continuously strengthening their squad, Esquivel’s future at the club appears uncertain as they explore alternatives to offload the struggling playmaker.
